- Temperature-will the bag filter be required to withstand extreme temperatures
- Product- material that will be filtered through the bag filter
- Chemistry- chemical makeup of dust particles-- will the material withstand the chemicals being filtered?
- Resistance- is the filter media able to resist the wear and tear of the particles being filtered?
Keep in mind that bag filter performance is directly related to how well it can tolerate the environment in which it is being used, how efficiently it is able to remove dust particles from it's fabric, and it's ability to be cleaned by the dust collector. As a starting point, it is helpful to identify the type of filter media currently used in the application.
Typical materials used in filter bags / bag filters are:
- Woven felts
- Woven materials- acrylic, polyester, cotton, polypropylene, fiberglass, Ryton (R), Nomex (R) / Conex (R)
- Non-woven felts
- Natural fibers
- Synthetics- Thermoset or Thermoplastics such as Polypropylene "PPRO"- Polyphenylene sulfide "PPS"- Polyester "PE"
In addition to the above materials, it is very common for bag filters to be finished with a special procedure (glazed, tinged, etc...) or coated with a membrane or coating (PTFE membrane, fire retardant). Typical bag filter finishes might include:
- Eggshell finish
- Flame Retardant
- Glazed
- PTFE Membrane
- Singed
- Micro coat
- Tetratex
- Gortex(R)
- Copper and stainless steel ground wire
- Fibertaxis
- Mirror
- Oleophobic
- Plain
- Portex
- Silicon

Synthetics: Thermoplastic
A simple test to determine if a material is a thermoplastic is to take a small swatch and put a flame to it. A thermoplastic material will begin to melt when exposed to direct heat. The selection crierion eliminates materials based on temperature and chemical characteristics. The first cut is usually made based on temperature. Then the chemical characteristics of the gas stream are considered to further refine the search. Next, the efficiency of the material further dictates the construction of the material i.e. the weight, oz/square foot, fiber and surface treatments / membranes. Last but not least, if there are still two or more candidates it comes down to a price versus performance trade off.
